ENJOY A NIGHT OUT IN PORTLAND!
The Evaluation 2006 Local Arrangements Committee has put together a terrific menu of evening outings to enable conference attendees to experience some what makes Portland unique and special. Outings include trips to Portland's hip and artsy Pearl District, a regional wine tasting and several dinners hosted by influential members of AEA and the field of evaluation.

Come Experience Portland’s Famous “First Thursday” Art Walk in the Pearl District
What: A walk through the Pearl District to visit Portland’s fine art galleries.
Your Local Host: Katie Steedly
Description: Your local host will lead the group to our starting point in the Pearl District. From there, wander at your leisure among some of the best shopping, restaurants, and art galleries that Portland has to offer. Many of Portland’s finest art galleries open their doors for the popular “First Thursday” art walk. Galleries frequently offer wine, appetizers, and live music to support your gallery-hopping.
Where we are going: The Pearl District (we will start at the Blackfish Gallery http://www.blackfish.com/, located at 410 NW 9th Ave and then attendees can wander the gallery-intensive district).
How we are getting there/home: We will meet at the hotel and travel by streetcar to the Pearl District. The walk to the streetcar is about 6 blocks. The "get on" point for the streetcar from the Hilton Main Building is at 10th and Yamhill. We will walk west on Taylor from the hotel to 10th Street (4 blocks) and one block north on 10th to the streetcar stop. We will get off at 10th and Everett and walk 1 block to the Blackfish Gallery. Individuals may meet us at the Blackfish Gallery http://www.blackfish.com/, located at 410 NW 9th Ave if they prefer to go by cab (parking is extremely difficult during First Thursday). Alternatively, you can walk to the starting point. The walk is approximately 0.6 miles and will take 15-20 minutes. Individuals will be responsible for returning to the hotel either by streetcar or taxi. Streetcars run until 11:30 PM. Rides on the streetcar, buses or Tri-Met Light Rail for this event are within the "Fareless Square" and are free.
Anticipated expenses: Galleries are free, some have a cash bar. Many restaurants are located in the Pearl District from inexpensive pizza to gourmet fine dining (reservations highly recommended on First Thursday). If you take a cab you can expect to pay approx $15 including tip. Street cars are free.

What Regional Wine Tasting with optional art walk Your Local Host: Charley Korns Description: Join us for a delightful evening sampling some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest wines along with some terrific food and entertainment at one of Portland’s premier wine bars in Portland’s hip art district. Urban Wine Works offers live music, appetizers, and features a local artist for this special First Thursday event. The Mel Brown B3 Organ Band: Mel Brown, a native Oregonian, artistic director, highly accredited Northwest drummmer, bandleader and educator, has been a fixture on the Portland jazz scene for over 40 years and has been labeled “The Gentleman of Jazz” and “The Musician’s Musician”.
Brown was the staff drummer for the Motown Music Corporation, working with the Temptations and the Supremes, and for ten years the drummer for an impressive list of celebrities including Diana Ross, Suzanne Somers, Hal Linden, Connie Francis, Pat Boone, and many more.
Brown has remained a passionate educator and has constantly worked with students, conducted jazz workshops and served as an adjudicator to the United States and abroad. Portland proclaimed June 22, 1998 Mel Brown Day in recognition of his accomplishments and his enormous contributions to today’s rich Oregon Jazz Scene.

Dr. Greene is a professor of Quantitative and Evaluative Research Methodologies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests focus on the intersections of social science and social policy. She works in the domain of educational and social program evaluation and seeks to advance the theory and practice of alternative forms of evaluation, including qualitative, participatory, and mixed-method evaluation approaches. Her current work emphasizes evaluation as a venue for democratizing dialogue about critical social and educational issues, with a focus on conceptualizing evaluation as a "public good."

Dr. Julnes is a professor of Research and Evaluation Methodology within the Department of Psychology at Utah State University. He has been program co-chair for the Quantitative Methods TIG for many years and is known for his work on mixed methods in service of “evaluation as assisted sensemaking.” He is currently in the process of co-editing, with Debra Rog, a volume of New Directions for Evaluation on the current controversy over methodologies to be used in federally-sponsored evaluations.

Host: Laura Leviton
Dr. Leviton is a senior program officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She has overseen evaluations in most of the areas of focus for the foundation, and now works primarily on Foundation initiatives preventing childhood obesity and in serving vulnerable populations. Her past experience has included serving as a professor of public health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. Dr. Leviton is a leading writer on evaluation methods and practice, in particular for disease prevention, and serves on several editorial boards for evaluation journals. She served as President of AEA in 2000.

Hosts: David Morgan and Richard Krueger
A unique opportunity to dine with two leaders in the field, local professor Dr. David Morgan and focus group guru Dr. Richard Krueger. Dr. Morgan is a university professor affiliated with the Department of Sociology at Portland State University. In addition to co-authoring the Focus Group Kit with Dr. Krueger, he has a forthcoming book from Sage entitled "Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Methods." Dr. Krueger is known for his efforts in using focus group interviewing within the public environment. He has written extensively about focus group interviewing including six books and numerous chapters in edited books. Dr. Krueger is a member of the graduate faculty at the University of Minnesota and teaches courses in program evaluation and research methods. His areas of specialization include program evaluation, applied research methodology and qualitative analysis.
Additional information: The spotlight of this dinner will be on focus group methodology. It will be of most interest to those who have recently completed or are about to embark upon a focus group.

One of the field’s most renowned evaluators, Dr. Scriven has made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy, psychology, and, of course, evaluation. He has authored more than 330 publications in 11 fields, including Evaluation Thesaurus, a staple of evaluation literature. At Western Michigan University, Dr. Scriven leads the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Evaluation, serves as Associate Director of The Evaluation Center, and holds tenure in the Department of Philosophy. Dr. Trochim is a Professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University, where he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in applied social research methods since joining the faculty in 1980. His research interests include the theory and practice of research, conceptualization methods (including concept mapping and pattern matching), strategic and operational planning methods, performance management and measurement, and change management. The author of The Research Methods Knowledge Base, an interactive web-based and print textbook, Dr. Trochim is the 2007 president-elect of AEA.
