ENJOY A NIGHT OUT IN BALTIMORE!
This year's event is to be held in two hotels, the Sheraton Baltimore City Center at 101 West Fayette Street and the Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore at 20 West Baltimore Street, in historic downtown Baltimore. The two venues are immediately adjacent to one another and connected by a short bridge above street level. Sessions and workshops will be held in both hotels while conference registration, your starting point for the conference, will take place on the Mezzanine level in the Radisson. These downtown venues will put you in the heart of the action. Description: Steve will lead you from the Sheraton through the beautiful Inner Harbor area. There is plenty to see – great shops, the Baltimore Aquarium, and a variety of restaurants and nightclubs. You will end up on Pier 5 of the Inner Harbor at McCormick and Schmick’s, a wonderful seafood restaurant.

Your Local Host: Taj Carson is the President of Carson Research Consulting, established to helps clients improve organizational performance using evidence-based strategies. She is the Vice-President of the Baltimore Area Evaluators and a five year Baltimore City resident.

What: A walking tour of Mt Vernon, a 19th century urban square.
Your Local Host: Catherine Carey of Practical Research loves cities; her cats are Skyscraper, Urbanite and Boulevard.
Description: Take a leisurely stroll through Mt Vernon, Baltimore's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender mecca. See the Hippo, Washington Monument, Peabody Conservatory, Mt. Vernon Park and more. We'll finish at the Mt. Vernon Stable and Saloon where drinks, desserts and dinner are scrumptious.

Your Local Hosts:
Gordon Bonham has 34 years of social and health research experience, including research with Towson University, the University of Louisville, and the National Center for Health Statistics. His career has focused on conducting applied social research and evaluation for nonprofit organizations and local, state and federal government. He has experience in private consulting, academic research, and governmental data collection. His areas of expertise include disability, social services, children and families, substance abuse, and health care. Gordon is also Past President of the Baltimore Area Evaluators.
David J. Bernstein is a Senior Study Director with Westat in Rockville, Maryland. He was previously an Evaluation Specialist with the Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools, where he was responsible for the district’s survey research. Prior to this he was with the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Finance and Office of Management and Budget, and served as a Performance Measurement Research Consultant to the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. Dr. Bernstein has also worked with the American National Red Cross and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He is a long time contributor to AEA.

Night Out #5: Wine Tasting with Laura Leviton

Dr. Leviton is a senior program officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She has overseen evaluations in most of the areas of focus for the foundation, and now works primarily on Foundation initiatives preventing childhood obesity and in serving vulnerable populations. Her past experience has included serving as a professor of public health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. Dr. Leviton is a leading writer on evaluation methods and practice, in particular for disease prevention, and serves on several editorial boards for evaluation journals. She served as President of AEA in 2000.
Your Local Guide: Mary Morris Hyde is Senior Managing Associate at the Association for Study and Development of Community. She provides research and technical support on the implementation of education, community development, and systems change projects. She is a long time member of the Baltimore Area Evaluators.

Night Out #6: International NGO Night with Jim Rugh

Jim Rugh has had 41 years of professional involvement in rural community development in Africa, Asia and Appalachia. He has specialized in evaluation for 25 years; the past 10 years as head of Design, Monitoring and Evaluation for CARE International, a large NGO. He now runs his own consulting business out of his home. His particular skills include promoting strategies for enhanced capacity for evaluation through world-wide organizations. He is a recognized leader in evaluation among colleagues in the international NGO community, including InterAction. He has been an active member of the American Evaluation Association since 1986.
Your Local Guide: Jaime Dominguez is a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist in US Operations at Catholic Relief Services (CRS) whose headquarters are located in Baltimore. Jaime’s experience in evaluation and research methods began at GAO, and expanded into quality control and statistics at two management consulting firms. Most recently, he has worked for Catholic Relief Services in both Internal Audit and Quality Assurance teams.

Night Out #7: Beer Tasting & Participatory Evaluation with Jean King

Dr. King is a professor in the Educational Policy and Administration Program at the University of Minnesota. She focuses on research that addresses two broad topics: (1) studying educational and evaluation practice in school settings, especially during school reform and change efforts, and (2) the role and function of program evaluation in school districts and other organizations, including the use of both the evaluation process and its results. The ultimate goal of her work is to determine how to foster and support evaluation processes in educational and social service organizations over time. The terms she uses to describe what she studies have evolved, from action research and process evaluation, to participatory or collaborative evaluation, and finally to evaluation capacity building. Dr. King is a long time member of AEA and Editor-in-Chief of New Directions for Evaluation.
Your Local Guide: Sathi Dasgupta is founder and President of SONA Consulting Inc. and has over twelve years of experience in research and evaluation, program support and technical assistance in the areas of health, substance abuse and reproductive health. She is also a current member of the Baltimore Area Evaluators.

Conrad Katzenmeyer is the former Director of Research, Evaluation and Communications at the National Science Foundation.
Your Local Guide: Kris Juffer is Executive Director of Action Research & Associates, Inc. based in the Washington DC/Baltimore corridor. She specializes in conducting program evaluations for the federal government, as well as educational programs, communications efforts, and US and international television and radio networks.
What: We'll share our stories of research "surprises" and "miraculous saves," and enjoy a great evening of camaraderie.
Description: Come share cocktails with old and new friends and Con Katzenmeyer, and an interesting evening's conversation over reasonably priced, yet outstanding, subtly seasoned Afghan cuisine in a quiet, sophisticated atmosphere. Weather.
In early November the days are still pleasant and warm, evenings can
be brisk. Area
Codes. When making calls in Baltimore, the
area code is needed for all local calls since the city has two area
codes. Streets.
Many streets will have N.S,E,W designations. Charles Street
separates East from West. Baltimore Street separates North from
South. St. Paul Street becomes Light Street at Baltimore Street.
Getting Around Water Taxi: This is a
good way to travel to some major attractions and neighborhoods
including Fort McHenry, Little Italy, Fells Point, and Canton. Runs
year round, 7 days a week; hours during conference, 11 am to 6 pm.

Between Inner Harbor and Fells Point, small 12 block neighborhood

East of the Inner Harbor and Little Italy. Settled by a shipbuilder
in 1730, this is one of the few remaining downtown waterfront

South of the Inner Harbor, this neighborhood served
as an observatory from 1795 to 1895. The top of Federal Hill offers

A few blocks east of Fells Point this is where many 19th
century European immigrants settled to work in canneries. There are

center of the city. The area includes museums, restaurants, and
shops.

culture, entertainment and historical attractions.
