| Abstract: The opening plenary will engage participants in active discussion of two questions directly related to the conference theme, “Evaluation and Learning”: (1) In what ways can evaluation be a learning experience? and, (2) How do evaluators know if, how, when, and what people are learning during an evaluation? I will play the dual roles of group facilitator and session framer. As group facilitator, I will engage attendees in short conversations using interactive techniques familiar to participatory evaluators. As session framer, I will explicate two overarching concepts harkening back to the Progressive era of the early 20th century: social justice as articulated by liberal Progressives, who focused on the democratic processes of meaningful citizenship; and, social control as articulated by conservative Progressives, who focused on scientific method to search for solutions to social ills. These concepts will frame a discussion about evaluative learning at both the society and the individual practitioner levels. |
