| Abstract: Building on our text, The Art, Craft, and Science of Evaluation Capacity Building, we are co-editing another on managing evaluation. It will use three case studies in public health, education and foundation work to ground analyses of evaluation management for accountability, program improvement and evaluation capacity building. We begin by briefly contrasting social research to program evaluation, move to briefly reviewing the literature on managing social research and point out that there is no in-print text and only a few articles on managing program evaluation. After suggesting why this state of affairs exists, we discuss our current understanding about managing the three evaluations, including draft principles and practices. In this, we are in-part enriching our New Directions for Evaluation issue on evaluation capacity building, as well as framing inquiry about the management of evaluation, and offering suggestions for practice. |
