| Abstract: Many evaluators carry the role of educator, facilitator, negotiator, or capacity builder that requires different knowledge and skills than the role of conducting an evaluation. Evaluators may know the techniques of good survey design, questionnaire development, quantitative analysis, but how do we enable non-evaluators to understand, engage in, conduct and use evaluation? Extension educators have much to bring to this area given their experience as nonformal adult educators working with diverse audiences, use of participatory techniques and interest in creating a safe and comfortable environment for learning and interaction. We will demonstrate several interactive techniques we have adapted - shuffle and sort; metaphor imaging; data dialogues; affinity clusters - that facilitate active learning of tough evaluation concepts or tasks. We will provide clear explanations of how we use each one to build evaluation capacity, its strengths and weaknesses, and its application for other evaluation learning purposes and in different settings. |
