Abstract: Too few extension educators employ observational rubrics. If you haven't used rubrics, or want to improve their use to score simple to complex behaviors and products, attend this skill-building workshop. Scoring rubrics shares expectations and feedback with youth or adult learners in your programs better than a list of objectives or outcomes. The greater transparency (i.e., specificity) of a rubric can enhance instruction-learner relationships as well as speed learning. A "rubric" is typically a one-page, table-based guide that specifies a range of behaviors -- from "not there yet" (or "insufficient") to "great" (or mastery). Rubrics are easy to create and score, but of course - there is a learning curve. This workshop will provide examples of 6 types of rubrics and will illustrate three types of "uses" of rubrics - from scoring 4-H and adult "products" made by learners to providing feedback about sensitive issues such as collegial behavior in groups. Workshop activities include viewing a brief (less than 10 minute) video of an instructor using, and talking about, rubrics as part of welding shop instruction. An interactive portion of the session will allow attendees to apply rubrics to a simulated "dialogue on diversity" session using a brief case study. The 90-minute workshop will provide time for attendees to create and obtain feedback from the instructor and fellow conferees on a draft of an observational rubric useful to their own programs.
