| Abstract: International non-governmental organizations (INGOs) became aware of the concept of organizational learning in the mid-1990s through literature review and observation of the corporate world and the U.S. military. As they explored corporate organizational learning theories, INGOs were challenged by staff turn-over, lack of institutional memory, and few requirements for reviewing past work. At the time donors, academics and the media were criticizing and questioning whether these agencies were learning from their past practices, mistakes, and successes. Borrowing from the corporate and military sector, some INGOs now use Real- time learning and After-Action review processes to capture explicit and tacit knowledge during or after an emergency response. Presenters will review the Real-time and After-Action review learning processes used by INGOs, and participants will practice how to use them by walking through a real-life case. This will be followed by a discussion of their value for organizational learning and evaluation policy. |
