| Abstract: In the last two decades significant methodological and analytical advances in Geography Information Science have been developed, making the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tool more applicable to a wider audience. In recent years, hardware and software prices have substantially decreased making GIS's components more accessible to universities, local governments, businesses and independent consultants. The result of these advances and developments has been a rapid dissemination of GIS applications to a wide variety of academic fields. However, in the environmental program evaluation field, GIS applications are not yet broadly used. The demonstration will show how this tool can be used in program evaluation through practical application. Practical applications will include rural development programs being evaluated through the use of GIS, and examples of how multi-temporal geographic data can be used to correlate socio-demographic parameters. The demonstration will also identify specific GIS software/hardware needs related to environmental program evaluation. |
