Session Title: Evaluative Tools for Articulating and Monitoring Foundation Strategy
Demonstration Session 884 to be held in Panzacola Section H4 on Saturday, Nov 14, 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
Sponsored by the Non-profit and Foundations Evaluation TIG
Presenter(s):
Helen Davis Picher, William Penn Foundation, hdpicher@williampennfoundation.org
Abstract: Foundation strategy as defined by the Center for Effective Philanthropy is "a framework for decision making that is focused on the external context in which the foundation works and includes a hypothesized causal connection between use of foundation resources and goal achievement." The presenter will introduce an evaluative tool (or collection of tools) that his/her foundation has developed to achieve one or more of the following objectives: 1) articulate the hypothesized causal connections between resource deployment and goal achievement to board members and others; 2) monitor progress toward goal achievement; 3) identify areas in which further evaluative work is needed. The presenter will demonstrate how the tool (or collection of tools) is used to achieve the objective(s) for a single strategy, the strengths and weaknesses of the tool, and how other foundations can use the tool.
