Session Title: Using Dosage as a Measure of Evaluating Character Education Impacts on Student Achievement and Student Discipline Outcomes
Demonstration Session 354 to be held in Suwannee 14 on Thursday, Nov 12, 3:35 PM to 4:20 PM
Sponsored by the Pre-K - 12 Educational Evaluation TIG
Presenter(s):

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical use of dosage as a measure of program implementation in evaluating the extent to which professional development centered on character education translated into changes in classroom practice, and the extent to which it improved student discipline, student perception of school climate, and student learning. The researchers evaluated differences in student discipline and student learning based on levels of exposure to the character education curriculum. There were statistically significant reductions in the average number of days lost to disciplinary actions at each participating school except one (p = 0.51) over the school year. The total minutes of PD (dosage) account for 4% of the variation in days lost to disciplinary action across the schools. At every grade level, except 7th Grade Mathematics, students in the high character education exposure group outperformed students in the low exposure group on state standardized assessments.
