Session Title: Tools to Help Government Research Programs Demonstrate and Communicate Impact
Demonstration Session 547 to be held in Sebastian Section I1 on Friday, Nov 13, 1:40 PM to 3:10 PM
Sponsored by the Government Evaluation TIG
Presenter(s):
Valerie Williams, RAND Corporation, valerie@rand.org
Eric Landree, RAND Corporation, landree@rand.org
Abstract: This presentation will demonstrate the use of tools (logic models, outcome worksheets, and outcome narratives) that were developed to help the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prepare for external review by the National Academies. Collectively, these tools provided a seamless method of linking program theory to data collection and research communication. The presenters will begin with a focus on demonstrating research impact and introduce the logic model template that articulated the program's theory of operations. Attendees will see examples of how logic models were used in various research contexts and served as a framework for the development of outcome worksheets. The second half of the presentation will focus on communicating research impact and describe the guidance for developing outcome narratives. The presenters will end with a discussion of the lessons learned from implementing these tools and their wider applicability for research programs throughout the federal government.
