| Abstract:
Dr. Kathleen Bolland, Assistant Dean of The University of Alabama School of Social Work, will provide a brief introduction to how the relatively new Council on Social Work Education Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards affect the curricular emphasis on evaluation and how that relates to the accountability movement in government and in social service agencies. She will then facilitate a discussion about how we teach evaluation to BSW, MSW, and PhD students and how social workers conduct and use evaluations in their practice (agency or private practice). This is a topic that every member of the TIG should find relevant and interesting! How were you taught about evaluation? What do you teach your students about evaluation? How broadly or narrowly should evaluation be taught at different levels of social work education? Come share your thoughts in this facilitated discussion, part of the annual business meeting for the SW TIG.

| Abstract:
Two years ago, Bill Trochim called attention to the issue of evaluation policy by making it the theme of the AEA conference. The present talk briefly reviews the concept of evaluation policy, highlights select aspects of recent writings about the topic, and summarizes some ongoing activities intended to help shape evaluation policy. I then offer one sketch of where we want to go in terms of the evaluation policy of the future, and also suggest activities that might help us get there. Much of the presentation will involve dialog with and across the audience on the twin topics of where we want to go in terms of evaluation policy, and how we want to get there. Perhaps we will end with a kind of agenda for future conversations and actions.

| Abstract:
During the business meeting, we'll engage in a discussion of attendees' experiences with disaster recover in Haiti and the Indian Ocean Tsunami, including taking a look at the following presentation:
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami combined recovery needs and funding on an enormous scale. The evident need for monitoring and evaluation (M&E) faced a common constraint—the lack of a ready framework that governments and international partners could employ to manage and adjust the recovery effort. Without such a system, many feared funding would be misused, needs unmet and inequalities worsened.
Supported by Red Cross and UN partners, the Tsunami Recovery Impact Assessment and Monitoring System (TRIAMS) initiative aimed to improve recovery M&E by focusing on some agreed recovery outcomes and outputs. Since 2006, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand have employed the TRIAMS approach to help manage recovery completion and assess results, while highlighting remaining gaps. This presentation describes step-wise lessons identified by TRIAMS participants: from agreeing on an indicator framework to collecting and analyzing data, to utilizing analysis. Such lessons can be useful to the Haiti recovery operation.
