| Abstract:
The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) focuses on promoting an innovative and collaborative culture in all teaching and learning activities. To further enhance the faculty and students’ collaboration capacity, SCAD institutionalized its collaboration efforts by establishing a collaborative learning center to facilitate, sponsor, and support the implementation of collaborative initiatives by engaging faculty, students, and external partners in an art and design context. SCAD developed an evaluation plan with multiple forms of assessments to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the collaborative learning environment and students’ collaboration expertise development. To examine the usefulness of those tools, SCAD pilot-tested a set of three assessment tools designed to document the effectiveness of the collaborative initiatives and collaboration expertise development process. The purpose of this presentation is to share the information garnered from SCAD’s pilot-testing effort.

| Abstract:
At a time when collaboration is both a buzzword and booming organizational initiative, we see it thriving in businesses, schools, and boardrooms, but is there a way to measure its quality and to quantify the success of collaborative efforts? Heightened interest in the nature of collaboration and its multifaceted components proved critical in driving this study of collaboration in design teams. The purpose of this paper is to report the findings regarding key indicators of successful collaboration within design teams based on evaluation of key indicators. The findings will be discussed in detail, as well as the process of designing the study, data collection methods, visualization of data, and directions for further study.

Youth Education in the Arts: New Collaboration Model for Funders, Arts Organizations, and Evaluators

| Abstract:
Evaluation played a central role in a multi-faceted new funding initiative, a "community catalyst grant," of the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, entitled "Youth Education in the Arts." Utilizing an empowerment evaluation model and an assessment of needs, the Foundation sought to build evaluation capacity in arts organizations so that they could articulate their benefit to kids (and to the community) and garner its support. A needs assessment raised awareness of the area's existing arts opportunities for youth and highlighted trends. Findings were released to the public in the Fall, 2009. Final qualitative and quantitative assessment continues as to whether this unique collaboration between funder, nonprofit agencies, and evaluator led to increased awareness and ultimately, stronger support for arts organizations. Results will be available fall, 2010.
