Abstract: Many evaluators, while familiar with what needs are and procedures for assessing them, are less knowledgeable about the unique aspects of and ways to design surveys for the endeavor. This short workshop will begin with questions asked of participants in regard to how they work with organizations as related to needs assessment (NA) surveys. From that starting point a brief overview of the NA process will be given followed by some key features of surveys (such as general guidelines, typical content areas, types of surveys, formats employed, groupings of questions, inclusion of multiple concerned stakeholders, item formats, scaling approaches, some analysis principles, etc). Participants will then use typical NA scenarios to try their hand at assorted item writing tasks. The workshop concludes with a group discussion of the nature of NA surveys, how they may be used, problems encountered, and other related issues.
