Abstract: This session will present information from a benchmark survey and analysis on evaluation practices in leading major U.S. foundations, and an presentation on performance measurement and approaches tools and practices in foundations and nonprofits. The presenters are two of the leading experts in the field. Commentators will be three directors of evaluation from three major national foundations. Having two presentations will allow for maximum dialogue among the panelists and with the audience.
Evaluation Practice at Major United States Foundations: Report on a Benchmark Survey and Analysis

This presentation will discuss the results from a landmark survey of 31 major U.S. foundations regarding their structure, financing, staffing, and use of evaluations. The survey was supplemented by follow up interviews, and is unique in providing benchmark data on these important issues.
Performance Measurement at Foundations and Nonprofits: Tools, Techniques, and Effective Practice

This presentation will discuss how foundations and nonprofits are using performance measurement tools, and also some innovative approaches to making those tools more widely available to the sector. It also will have a critical analysis on how the sector is responding to the challenges and opportunities posed by the increasing demand for accountability and performance measurement.
