| Abstract:
This paper provides a synthetic review of literature examining the effectiveness of interventions in agricultural extension and advisory services in fostering improved outcomes for farmers in developing countriers. The review was conducted to Campbell/ Cochrane Collaboration standards of systematic review, while also emphasising the context-mechanism configurations which underlie program effectiveness. Quantitative estimates from impact evaluations examining effectiveness of extension interventions were synthesised using meta-analysis. The review also provides special focus on synthesis of quantitative and qualitative literature on farmer field schools (FFSs), the extension modality which has received much attention from policy makers globally in recent years.
