Abstract: Gays and lesbians visit museums somewhat more frequently than heterosexuals, yet are less likely to be members or donors. These differences are observed even when demographic characteristics other than sexual orientation are similar. In a recent evaluation of an exhibits, a museum agreed to the collection of information about whether the visitor identified as gay or lesbian, and whether he or she was in a relationship with a partner. This paper describes what was learned from adding this additional demographic component.
