| Abstract: This is a year for celebration: the Government Evaluation TIG celebrates two decades in making a stamp on quality; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) celebrates four decades protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment on which life depends. One of the goals central to EPA’s mission is protecting air quality so that our nation’s air is safe and healthy to breathe and risks to human health and the environment are reduced. To protect air quality, the Clean Air Act requires EPA to establish national ambient air quality standards; since 1977, this legislation has articulated systemic and systematic links among research, policy decisions, and evaluation. This paper describes these links and illustrates how they have improved the quality of the knowledge and evidence used in evaluation and decision-making for national ambient air quality standards for particulate matter. |
