A Formative Evaluation of the Dentists Fighting Nicotine Dependence (DFND) Program to Prevent Adolescent Tobacco use in Saudi Arabia

| Abstract:
Our cross-sectional study in 2010 identified the current status of tobacco use and the factors associated with adolescent tobacco use among middle school students in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Based on study results, we have developed a tobacco prevention program, Dentists Fighting Nicotine Dependence (DFND), targeting factors (determinants) such as students' attitude, subjective norm, knowledge and perceived behavioral control. The purpose of the DFND program is to prevent tobacco initiation at an early age among middle school students in Jeddah. This study presents the development process and formative evaluation of the DFND program. Theory of planned behavior was adopted to develop a conceptual model for the program and to predict tobacco use. Theory-driven evaluation design is applied to assess whether the DFND program could affect the determinants described above and whether those determinants could actually decrease the number of students initiating tobacco use.

Mapping a postulated theory of change for four World Vision programs in a multi site evaluation in Sierra Leone

A multi site evaluation of four community development programs in Sierra Leone examines program performance and analyses programs' contribution to improvements in child wellbeing.
As Wayne (2008) argues, a results chain/logic model is not a theory of change. Logic models existed for the four programs, but not their theories of change. The evaluation sets out to map their theories of change and reviews assumptions and risks on;
