Abstract: The focus of this hands-on workshop is to instruct attendees how to write effective items for collecting survey research data. Bad items are easy to write. Writing good items is more challenging than most people are aware. Writing effective survey items require a complete understanding of the impact that item wording can have on a research effort. Only through adequate training can a good survey items be discriminated from the bad. This 90-minute workshop focuses specifically on Dillman's (2007) principles of question writing. After a brief lecture, attendees will then be asked to use their newly gained knowledge to critique items from selected national surveys.
