Session Title: Value-added Estimates as Part of Teacher Evaluations: From Data Management to Results Interpretation
Demonstration Session 953 to be held in Pacific C on Saturday, Nov 5, 2:20 PM to 3:50 PM
Sponsored by the Quantitative Methods: Theory and Design TIG and the Pre-K - 12 Educational Evaluation TIG
Presenter(s):

Abstract: Value-added estimates have emerged as part of teacher evaluation and even become an important component of the basis for performance-based pay. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate the process of carrying out value-added analysis from data management in SPSS, to multi-level modeling in HLM, and to the interpretation of value-added estimates for teachers. The technical part of the value-added estimates should benefit program evaluators who are interested in data analysis. Importantly, interpretation of value-added estimates for teachers and implications for attempts to identify the highly effective and ineffective teachers will be discussed. The 4 cohorts of mathematics scores from standardized tests of 4th and 5th graders in one of the nation's largest school districts will be used for this demonstration. Although this workshop involves the background and data from value added educational evaluation, the principles and methods are applicable to other fields in which performance estimation is important.
