Abstract: With increased interest in the role of philanthropy in building movements, a new surge of foundation investments have spawned growth in movement building work. In this think tank session, we will lay a framework for discussion based on evaluations of several foundation initiatives focusing on infrastructure building, community organizing, and policy advocacy. These initiatives include the work of The California Endowment, Ford Foundation, 21st Century Foundation, and NoVo Foundation. After the initial theories and frameworks are laid out, we will share examples, raise issues, and invite participants to share their ideas and evaluation work to address the following questions: What are the key components of foundations' involvement in movement building? How should foundations be involved movement building? What are promising practices by foundations that transcend traditional program silos, equalize power relationships, and maintain a steady focus over many years? What are key indicators of effective philanthropic practices in movement building?
