REQUEST FOR INTEREST
Leadership Recruitment Task Force

Deadline: Thursday, October 1, 2009

The American Evaluation Association is seeking nominations for volunteers to serve on AEA’s Recruitment Task Force. This volunteer opportunity is for a one-year, renewable term.

The Recruitment Task Force supports one of the Leadership Committee’s core charges: to identify and recruit qualified members to run for AEA offices of Board member, Treasurer, and President-elect. Task Force members and chair are selected by the Leadership Committee, following the criteria listed below.

Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities of the Recruitment Task Force within this charge include:
  • Identifying and recruiting a diverse pool of potential candidates for vacancies in leadership roles. Diversity will include:
    • gender balance,
    • minority representation,
    • disciplinary heterogeneity,
    • practitioner/ academic balance,
    • geographic heterogeneity,
    • heterogeneity of areas of application, and
    • International representation.

The first six diversity dimensions are specified by the Bylaws; the seventh follows from the fact that AEA represents itself as an international professional association.

  • Considering the unique requirements of Board members, President-elect, and Treasurer in developing recruitment strategies.

Selection Criteria: This task force requires prior experience and familiarity with AEA. Specific criteria include:

  • Knowledge of the organization, its structure, and members

  • Good skills at interfacing with members

  • Cultural diversity, consistent with those we seek to recruit for slate

  • Inclusion of a Past President

  • Inclusion of a junior member

  • Availability to serve

Special skills required for vetting people for specific offices (e.g., Treasurer, in this upcoming cycle)

Terms of Service: Continuity is important on this task force. Members serve one-year, renewable terms. The Task Force Chair is asked to make a three-year commitment. Members of the Task Force may not run for elected office during their term of service.

Operation: The Recruitment Task Force meets by conference call at the discretion of the Chair. It is most active in the months preceding the annual Nominations deadline. Task force members typically convene in the summer, following the announcement of the year’s election results, and plan for vacancies that will be open in the following election. They solicit names of potential candidates from the Leadership Committee and the Board, and they actively network within AEA to generate additional names. They follow up with individuals to explore their interest in elected office. Contacts are made via phone and email and in person at the annual conference. Once the Call for Nominations is posted, Recruitment Task Force members may also answer questions about the election process from potential self-nominees and they may offer support in the preparation of nomination packages. Their role in a given election cycle concludes with the submission of nominations. To avoid any conflict of interest, the Task Force Chair does not participate in the slate selection process. The Recruitment Task Force tracks persons who may have an interest in running for office in future cycles so that they can be re-contacted as appropriate.

To Apply: Please submit a letter of interest and a curriculum vita or resume via email to gwen@eval.org. The letter should be no more than one page and include information directly addressing the above.
